Finding Gay Culture Outside of Urban Areas
Anyone can follow the rainbow flags to the gay neighborhoods of San Francisco or New York. But what if you're stranded in a place where the campiest thing around is the local KOA?
- A good place to start is with a gay-travel guide. The Damron Company publishes a wide variety of guides to North America. Two particularly good ones are the Damron Address Book (primarily for men), and Women's Traveler. Ferrari Publications produces a yearly Places of Interest guide listing gay- and lesbian-friendly spots in cities around the world. These guides can help you find hotels, restaurants, bars, and cultural events where you don't have to be closeted if you don't want to be.
- Additionally, more and more mainstream guides, such as those published by Frommers, are featuring comprehensive gay sections. For starters, you can check out the Travolocity Destination Guides. These online guides contain information on dozens of cities worldwide. You'll find information about the gay scene in many of these destinations under the heading "Special Interest."
- If you have time before your trip, get in touch with as many local gay organizations as you can. They will be an invaluable source of information for you. Of course, don't forget your own community. Spread the word about your upcoming travel plans to friends and acquaintances. Chances are someone you know, even a friend of a friend of a friend, will be able to offer helpful suggestions about places to go, things to do, and where to stay.
- Once you've reached your destination, check out traditional gay gathering places, including bars, sporting events, beaches, art events, etc. Even if you're not looking to date anyone, you may encounter others eager to connect with gay and lesbian travelers--and you can get the local scoop on other activities and sights not to miss.
